Working together to reduce oil-dependency and re-localise in Hackney

Great meeting on transport last night

So last night's "meeting" - they are really talk events now - was by Carl Pittam of Sustrans. Sustrans have been going for over 30 years and do projects such as re-designing residential streets to make them more friendly to people and less car-centric, slowing down or stopping traffic and adding planters and other greenery. There are 2 pilots in Hackney of the "DIY Streets" project which gets residents to meet and talk about problems on their street and what they would like done about it. The 2 streets are: corner of Brook Road and Evering Road and Clapton Terraces. After 3 years of discussion work now has now finally commenced. If these pilot schemes are well-received the council may well request that more streets are given this treatment.
I'd love if it our street (Wilton Way) could be made a no-thru road. It doesn't really need to be as it runs parallel with two other streets and has numerous side-turnings so residents can still get their cars onto their bit of the street and park outside their house, but it would nice to get rid of some of the traffic that zooms too fast round the corner.
Recently there was a Big Lunch on Parkholme Road. Having the road blocked off and parked cars replaced by people and tables full of food looked, and felt, wonderful.
To help out towards this dream, we are going to get rid of our two(!) vehicles and are considering the options, Streetvan being one of them (we need a van as we play in a band and I have the PA system).
What we really need is some enterprising souls to set up a TTH Transport group and research the options for these kind of things on our local streets.... any takers...?

Cool, will sign up to Streetvan then I think.
Great article, have been noticing electric vans around a fair bit:
"We spend £25 a week charging an electric van, compared with £200 on a diesel...As well as costing less in fuel, electric vans don't need an MOT, are zero-rated for road tax and have no oil or filters to change."
No brainer!

I've been using Streetcar for a few months now and it's worked out great. Never used the vans though, although I can see how it would be a good choice if you only need a van for a couple of hours.

Hopefully we'll be seeing more electric vans on the streets over time - I know that Streetcar have started considering how to involve electric vehicles in their scheme.

what band do you play in? If you ask Streetvan/car they are always looking for new locations..
